Altered $1.00 Wood Frames

Hello there!
I thought I'd show you my frames today. I'll be doing these up with the Ridgeview residents this Friday. I usually do cards, but since Mothers Day is coming up, maybe they'd like these for themselves or as gifts for their daughters.
First I took the wood frame and used it as a template to draw on the back of a piece of scrapbook paper. I just drew the outside of the frame. Then I cut it out and put it aside.

I brushed mod podge on the front of the frame, working quickly before it dried (you could mod podge the back of the paper too, but I didn't want glue in the middle of the paper where I had to cut it).

I made sure I had the paper pattern the right way, and then stuck the back of it onto the front of the frame. I rubbed it down (could use a roller) using even pressure. It didn't take long before it was dry and I could trim the edges with an exacto knife, and cut out the inside of the frame. I mod podged over the front again to seal the paper on the wood.

Then I sanded all the edges and rubbed some 'metallic rub-on' on them to give them a little bit of a sheen.  From here on the ladies will embellish them with stickers, ribbon, flowers, bling, butterflies, etc. As you can see, I used the metallic rub-on for the flowers too.
Normally I bring my Scrapbooking Tote with a ziploc bag full of what I need. Not this time! This time I have my Tote and two shoe boxes! That's not counting the stack of frames. Guess I'll be making a couple of trips back and forth this time!
I made up the butterflies myself too. I found some butterfly pictures online and ran them off on clear acetate. I cut them out and decorated them up with stickles to make them a bit glittery! Here's a photo of one...it's not a great shot, but you get the idea. Sometimes I use colored rhinestones for their bodies too.
Well, that's it for today. I hope this will be a fun project for them! I'm already thinking about the Father's Day card I want to do with them. :)

UPDATE!

The Ridgeview 'card' class went well. The ladies made up their frames and then went to happy hour. Lol...a good day, I would suspect! Since then, my girlfriend came over and made up one of the frames. Here's her take on this project. Very pretty!

Have a good week!
Blessings,
Carmen

  4. Your frame is beautiful, Carmen and so is the butterfly. I think they will love this project. I know I would. :)

Do you have a metal luggage rack on wheels? I put my craft stuff in a box and strap it to my luggage rack to carry it in to places. It saves me from making trips back and forth. You can strap your scrap booking bag on top of the box of stuff if you need to. You'd be surprised how much you can stack. Have a great crafting day at Ridgeview!!!

    1. Thanks Shelly! I don't have a luggage rack on wheels. That's a great idea though! Maybe I could use one of our portable bags with wheels and put everything inside it. Hmmmm...thanks for the inspiration!

  6. I have only painted on these frames. I love the decoupage work. Acetate butterflies? Gee.... That really is cool! Yes, whatever the residents come up with will make a $1 frame look stunning; they can't miss.

And, my bell choir uses luggage on wheels to take our extras around. Well-placed pockets to carry brushes, sprinkles, etc. That is a great suggestion! Have fun!!....

  11. What a beautiful project and I bet the ladies loved making the frame also. I looked this weekend and could not find any wooden $1.00 frames anyplace. The Dollar tree only had glass or plastic.

What is acetate paper? The butterflys look very pretty.

  12. Lora, acetate paper are clear sheets that you can run through your printer. The butterflies were just printed and cut out. You can add stickles or pearls and bend them into shape.
